Keyword Research for AEO and GEO: Questions and Evidence

Research customer questions for AEO and GEO, create evidence-backed answers and observe AI mentions and citations without ranking guarantees.

By Badal Kumar4 min read

Research for answer-led and generative discovery begins with the questions people need resolved. This guide explains how to extend an SEO topic plan into clear answers, useful comparisons and credible evidence, then distinguish an observed brand mention from a citation or website visit.

Extend Research Into AEO and GEO Questions

Answer Engine Optimization focuses on clear answers to defined questions. Generative Engine Optimization broadens the research to the explanations, comparisons and evidence people encounter through generative discovery experiences. These are useful working descriptions; platform terminology and reporting can differ.

Research questions across the decision journey

Stage Question pattern Example
Understanding What is it? What is a technical SEO audit?
Diagnosis Why is this happening? Why are my product pages not indexed?
Evaluation Which approach suits this case? Shopify SEO vs general ecommerce SEO: what differs?
Selection What should I ask a provider? What should an SEO audit deliver?
Implementation How does the work happen? How do we prioritise audit findings with a developer?

Use customer conversations, search research and observed AI answers to identify gaps. AI-generated keyword suggestions are brainstorming material: validate their relevance and factual claims before using them.

Build a useful answer, then support it

Lead with a direct response to the question. Follow it with the conditions, explanation and evidence needed to make that response dependable.

For example:

Keyword mapping assigns search themes to website pages so each important customer need has a clear destination. It helps teams decide whether to improve an existing page, publish a new resource or consolidate redundant content.

The rest of the section should show how to do the task. Short introductory answers help readers orient themselves, but arbitrary paragraph lengths or tiny content fragments are not a citation strategy.

Give readers something worth referencing

Useful contributions can include an original template, a clearly labelled worked example, a documented method, an appropriately sourced comparison or genuine first-hand findings. Explain methods and limitations when presenting research.

A source link should lead to evidence that supports the nearby statement. Do not invent statistics, endorsements, customer results or citations to make a page appear authoritative.

Maintain technical eligibility

For Google’s AI search features, its guidance emphasises standard search foundations and says there is no special AI schema requirement. Important content should be available as text, discoverable through links and eligible for search snippets. Eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. Other platforms have their own access policies. Check their current official crawler documentation and your actual server responses rather than assuming one robots setting covers every service. There is no guaranteed formula for earning an AI citation.

How to Observe AI Visibility

Where available, Bing Webmaster Tools’ AI Performance reporting shows citation activity across supported Microsoft AI experiences. Treat those observations as citations, not a universal ranking or proof that a single content update caused a change. Bing Webmaster Tools: AI Performance

For manual checks elsewhere, record the question, platform, date, market context and the exact cited URL. Distinguish a brand mention from a linked citation and from a visit to the website. A small prompt sample cannot represent every user or every AI answer.

Connect AI Questions With the Existing Website

Before creating another article, use the keyword mapping process to check whether an existing page already owns the question. For writing and publishing the answer, follow the content brief and quality checks. The objective is useful coverage, not a parallel set of near-identical “AI-optimised” pages.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need different pages for SEO, AEO and GEO questions?

Only when the reader’s task warrants it. Many direct questions fit naturally into a useful SEO guide or service page. A separate resource is appropriate when it provides a distinct explanation rather than repeats the same information under a new label.

Will keyword research guarantee Google rankings or AI citations?

No. Research helps you choose relevant topics and build better pages, but outcomes also depend on competition, technical access, content quality and platform decisions. Improve what you can control and measure the results without promising a permanent position or citation.
